Company Interview11 Feb, 2026

Key points:

Record first-half profit and 6% lift in cash earnings for Commonwealth Bank (ASX:CBA) Net interest margin down, operating costs up due to tech investment and competition from Macquarie Group (ASX:MQG) $2.35 fully franked interim dividend exceeds consensus Continued focus on technology, AI, and customer service, with regional Australia a growth area Anticipation of one more interest rate hike, but limited credit stress detected among borrowers

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA) has posted record-breaking first half cash earnings, driven by robust growth in lending and deposit volumes. CEO Matt Comyn pointed to a 6% rise in cash profit after tax to $5.45 billion, surpassing market estimates. Despite this, CBA’s net interest margin slid four basis points to 2.04% due to intensifying competition, particularly from peers like Macquarie Group (ASX:MQG). Operating expenses rose by 5% in the period, with more than $1 billion channelled into CBA’s technology overhaul, including a 10% uplift in AI-related investment. Comyn notes that a fully franked interim dividend of $2.35 per share was declared, exceeding last year’s payout and analyst consensus.

Comyn stresses ongoing commitment to technological innovation, customer protection, and maintaining the largest branch and ATM network in Australia, especially in regional areas. Lending to agribusiness and regional customers has achieved double-digit growth. CBA’s approach has also emphasised engagement with employees regarding AI adoption and career development, with minimal workforce disruption expected in the near term.

Addressing interest rate concerns, Comyn forecasts only one more rate hike in May and sees limited stress among CBA’s mortgage holders. He highlights focus on long-term sustainable performance, customer acquisition, and the delivery of consistent dividend returns as keys to maintaining stakeholder confidence.
