Phase 2 in sight as reinvention reaps rewards

Company Interview17 Feb, 2026

Percheron Therapeutics (ASX: PER) is currently advancing its lead candidate, HMBD-002, an immuno-oncology therapy targeting some of the most challenging cancers and rare diseases. James Garner outlines that HMBD-002 differentiates itself from existing therapies by focusing on a newly discovered part of the immune system called Vista, rather than the more commonly targeted PD-1 pathway. Laboratory results indicate that suppressing Vista has a potent impact on tumour growth, positioning HMD02 as a promising candidate in the fight against cancer.

Garner shares that Percheron Therapeutics underwent a significant strategic pivot last year after an earlier asset underperformed. This reinvention has allowed the company to strategically focus on immuno-oncology, with early phase one human trial results showing HMBD-002 to be exceptionally safe and suggestive of efficacy in certain patients. The company is now in preparation for phase two trials, set to begin in the second half of the year, and is working closely with clinicians and researchers to define trial parameters. Garner points to the broad applicability of HMBD-002 across several tumour types, including breast, lung, and oesophageal cancers.

Percheron Therapeutics closed December 2025 with about $4.5 million cash in hand, operating with a very lean structure to maximise R&D investment. The company seeks to partner with or become an acquisition target for larger pharmaceutical firms rather than independently commercialise the drug.
