the open: ASX to jump, Tesla revenue slumps

The local market looks set to push towards a new record today with ASX futures up 0.3%, as the dow led gains in New York, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also moved higher. 

Tech giants, Alphabet and Tesla released their earnings after the closing bell. Alphabet beat Q2 estimates and raised its 2024 capex to $85B, citing strong cloud demand. Meanwhile, Tesla posted a 12% drop in revenue - its sharpest in over a decade - and missed earnings estimates with 40 cents per share versus the 43 expected. 

EU trade negotiators say a deal with the US is nearing, potentially setting a 15% base tariff with possible exemptions. Currently, EU exports face a 30% tariff starting August 1, pledged by President Trump. 

The US dollar rose against the euro and Swiss franc but fell versus the Yen amid uncertainty over Japan's Prime Minister. Meanwhile, the Australian dollar climbed above US66c.
