VRX Silica targets Asia's hunger for sand

Company Interview03 Mar, 2026

VRX Silica (ASX:VRX) is progressing as the most advanced pure play silica sand company listed on the ASX, with five projects in Western Australia boasting a combined mineral resource exceeding 1.4 billion tonnes. Managing director Bruce Maluish from VRX Silica highlights Arrowsmith North as the largest silica sand development in the state, specifically targeted for export rather than the local construction industry. Regulatory approvals have posed significant challenges, particularly due to the project's scale and unique rehabilitation methods. However, the permitting process is well-structured and post-approval oversight is robust. Recent developments include the acquisition of an adjoining farm, enabling relocation of processing plant infrastructure to reduce environmental impact and simplify environmental offsets.

Maluish points to sustained demand in Asia, with foundry and glass markets under long-term pressure due to limited regional supply of high-quality sand. VRX Silica has established multi-year offtake arrangements with key players in Japan and Korea, who service car manufacturers such as Nissan and Honda. The company stands apart by supplying both glass and foundry sand, targeting markets grappling with rising scarcity and quality demands. Maluish also notes China’s shift to producing artificial sand due to procurement constraints.

The company's Muchea project has the potential to supply ultra-high purity silica for solar panel glass, benefiting from locally sourced inputs and low-cost energy in Western Australia. Interest from Asian and European glassmakers reflects ongoing strategic opportunities, and VRX Silica is laser-focused on closing its valuation gap by fast-tracking production and generating sustainable cash flow.
